Tiny EcoBoost engine is best for fifth year in a row

The 1.0-litre Ford EcoBoost engine has won the 2016 International Engine of the Year Best Engine under 1.0-litre award for the fifth year in a row.

The judging panel at the International Engine of the Year awards highlighted the EcoBoost’s economy, performance, drivability, technology and refinement as all are setting the standard in this size of engine.

The prize was presented to Ford’s EcoBoost engine after a panel of 65 automotive journalists from over 30 countries voted for their favourite engine. This year, the car and van manufacturer held off the challenge from 32 competitor engines to claim the top spot.

The EcoBoost engine is a popular choice

In 2015 over 105,000 Ford vehicles were sold in the UK with the 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine. Now the engine is used in eleven models, including the Ford Transit Connect, Transit Courier, Fiesta, EcoSport and B-MAX, which are all available to buy at Ford van and car dealers in Salisbury and across the rest of Britain and Europe.

In fact, around one in three Ford vehicles that were sold in the UK in 2015 featured the 1.0-litre engine and just under half of all Ford Fiesta cars that were sold came with the EcoBoost engine.

The EcoBoost engine, which is available with 100 PS, 125 PS, 140 PS and 180 PS, powers vehicles in 72 countries.

Speaking to the Ford Motor Company Media Center, Joe Bakaj, who is vice president of Product Development for Ford of Europe, said, “The 1.0-litre EcoBoost was a game-changer, and despite others following our lead, it remains the undisputed benchmark in its class five years on.

“The spirit of innovation continues to drive us as we look to use the same smart thinking for a new breed of efficient, clean and powerful down-sized diesel engines.”

As a result of the success of the Ford EcoBoost petrol engines, the technology is being used in the new 2.0-litre EcoBlue diesel engine, which has recently been launched in the Ford Transit.

The new Ford Transit models, which are available in Ford van dealerships in Taunton and other local dealerships, are using high pressure direct fuel injection, low inertia turbocharger and other low friction elements.
