How to qualify for Motability

The Motability Scheme is primarily designed for individuals who receive one of the following disability allowances:

You are also eligible if you are the parent or guardian of a child aged three or over and who is receiving the mobility component of DLA.

If you don’t drive, you can still benefit from the Motability Scheme by nominating someone else to drive your vehicle on your behalf.

You must have at least 12 months remaining on your mobility allowance: check your award letter or contact your allowance provider to confirm. If you have less than 12 months remaining, you will need to wait for your allowance to be renewed before applying.


Who is Not Eligible?

You cannot apply to join the Motability Scheme if you receive:

  • A lower rate or component of mobility allowance
  • Attendance Allowance
  • Carer’s Allowance
  • Employment and Support Allowance (ESA)

Once you have found a Motability car you like and that suits your needs, the next step is to apply. Applying for a Motability car is simple. If you're eligible and have found a vehicle you like. You can apply in two ways:


Through a Dealership

Visit a Motability dealership, such as Foray Motor Group, and schedule an appointment with their Motability specialists. You'll need:

  • A UK passport or driving licence of the appointee or customer applying.
  • National Insurance number (NINO) or Customer Reference Number (CRN) of the person receiving the allowance.
  • Driving licences for all drivers (including any claims history)
  • Driver declaration (if the driver is not there)
  • Grant award letter (if applicable)

Who can drive a Motability car?

You can insure up to three drivers on your Motability vehicle, including yourself.

If you opt for the Mobility Schemeit’s not essential for you to drive. You can nominate friends and family members as drivers if you are not capable of driving the vehicle yourself. Up to two drivers can be nominated for no cost at all, with an extra cost for a third person. All of the people you nominate should live within five miles of your address and agree to Motability's terms and conditions.

The eligibility of your nominated drivers will depend on 3 things:

  • Their ages – only one driver under the age of 21 is allowed
  • Any criminal record they might have
  • The insurance group of the Motability car you choose

What is Motability allowance?

Can you use a Motability car for work?

Yes, you can use a Motability car or van for work.

Insurance is always included when leasing a vehicle through the Motability Scheme - which includes travel to and from your normal workplace.

When you sign up for your new Motability vehicle, you will need to review your insurance details. The current provider is Direct Line Motability (DLM).


Can you buy your Motability car after 3 years?

Unfortunately, you cannot buy your Motability car at the end of your three-year lease. However, when your lease ends, the following options will be available to you:

  • Stay with the Motability Scheme and lease another car.
  • Extend the lease on your existing car for up to two years – depending on mileage and adaptations.
  • Return your car and have your mobility allowance reinstated.
