New App Offers Potential for Reduced Insurance
Business insurer Direct Line for Business is offering fleet managers an opportunity to reduce their vehicle insurance simply by downloading a free app. The app, called DrivePlus Van, is geared towards the drivers of individual fleet vans. It tracks the vehicle’s movements in order to determine a driving score, and if the score is appropriate the company is making a 15% insurance discount available.
The company requires that the van logs at least 300 miles on the app, and in a nod to the fact that not all driving is done on company time, it allows drivers to un-tag specific trips so that times when they are passengers with another driver behind the wheel, or when the driver is riding a train or a bus, will not count in their log. The app provides a highest possible score of 100, and it tracks the amount of time that an individual journey takes, the distance travelled and different driving activities that determine the overall score.
According to Jasvinder Gakhal, a representative of Direct Line for Business, the app makes it possible for telematics to be used to reduce costs in an entirely new way. “With capital still stretched for many small businesses, owners of commercial vans are understandably concerned about the cost and risks of operating their vehicle. Telematics encourages responsible driving and through our App this can earn drivers a significant discount on their van insurance.”
The app is available immediately through the Apple App Store.
