MOT Test Essential During Lockdown 3

Car owners in England have been told that their MOT test is still essential during the 2021 national lockdown.

We understand that some may be confused by this, since during the first national lockdown in 2020, the need for the annual check was placed on hold. Drivers were granted a six-month extension if their MOT was due to expire before 31st July 2020. This time, it's different, and it's important to keep your vehicle correctly maintained.

Car owners in the UK have been told to make sure they do not miss their MOT, even if they are not currently able to use their vehicle.

Guidance, which you can read by clicking here, explains that you'll need to book a test as usual, but if you are isolating, shielding or have Covid-19 symptoms, you must not travel to an MOT test centre.

Jack Cousens, the head of roads policy for the AA, said: “The MOT centres are still open, so people should still get them done; that way you’ll have the vehicle ready if there’s an emergency situation and you need it.” The AA are concerned that drivers who have been furloughed, or are working from home, might be tempted to leave their MOT to expire, intending to renew it only when lockdown restrictions have been lifted.
