The Department for Transport has unveiled a scheme which will allow local housing associations to purchase environmentally friendly hybrid vans for no more than the cost of a traditional diesel model.
The newly announced Low Carbon Vehicle Procurement Programme (LCVPP) should mean that, in the future, more economical Transit vans and other light commercial vehicles will begin to be put to more widespread use by regional authorities throughout the country.
With the subsidy available amounting to over £3,400 for each hybrid LCV bought, this latest move represents a further expansion of a project that was initially aimed at other local and central government bodies reducing their fuel consumption and carbon emission levels.
As vans in Dorset and all other areas of the UK play a vital role in the daily duties of housing association staff, it is hoped that the LCVPP incentive will be taken up by many councils for this purpose sooner rather than later.
