Southampton Council is currently taking one step further towards lowering its carbon emissions with the news that is has started trials of hydrogen powered Ford Transit vans.
The clean fuel commercial vehicles were adapted by the locally based company ITM Power, and are part of an environmental drive that was agreed eighteen months ago. The Transit vans are reported to cost the same as conventional vehicles to power, but with the added bonus of being totally carbon neutral.
The council have suggested that should the trials be successful, many of the council's 400 vehicles could be adapted and refitted to be powered by hydrogen.
