Ford Fiesta remains UKs most bought car in March

The evergreen Ford Fiesta has once again been named as the UK's favourite domestic vehicle amongst car buyers, topping the charts for sales in the month of March.

Ford UK and the wider motor industry in general have enjoyed a strong start to the year, but the performance of the Fiesta, which has regularly been named as the country's best selling model in recent times, is particularly impressive; with 22,748 units driven away from showrooms in March alone, it sold over 5,000 more examples than its nearest contender for the title of most popular car.

Impressive sales figures were also recorded for the Focus which, with 15,434 sold, came in as the third most widely bought car of the month. Analysts were also keen to point out that the highly encouraging sales took place despite market concerns that superstitious drivers may try to stay away from the recently launched, supposedly unlucky '13' registration plate!

In what was, by coincidence, the 13th month in a row in which sales of new cars have grown nationwide, a 5.9 per cent rise was recorded in a year-on-year comparison with March 2012. The new data released by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) also showed that the first quarter as a whole has been very positive for the motoring industry.

According to the official figures, the 605,198 new cars which were sold between the start of January and the end of March represents a 7.4 per cent rise on sales recorded throughout the same period last year. Summarising the current situation, Mike Baunton, interim chief executive at the SMMT, explained that 'consistent monthly growth in the market is an encouraging sign of returning consumer confidence'.
