Ford Continues to Lead UK Market

The sales figures for the first half of 2014 have been released by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), and the record shows that Ford continues to lead the UK in sales of car, commercial vehicle, and total vehicle sales. Its nearest competitor falls short by over 54,000 units.

For the commercial vehicle market, Ford Transit and Transit Custom rank as number one and number two best selling CVs respectively, and in combining all Transit models the vehicle is the fifth best selling model overall, beating out many notable passenger car brands. Additionally, Ford holds the number one and number two spot for best-selling car with the Ford Fiesta and Ford Focus.

Ford of Britain chairman and managing director Mark Ovenden said, “Ford has extended its sales lead through the first half of 2014 thanks to the support of its dealer partners, who make up the strongest dealer network in the UK, and the company’s commitment to new models and technologies.”

“This investment is today extending Ford’s market footprint in the important CV segment with the Ford Transit family, and will fuel future premium model introductions such as the Ford Edge, the Ford Mustang and the Vignale ranges. Evidence of Ford’s industry-leading technologies is seen in sporty new Ford Fiesta editions that use a 140PS version of the 1.0 liter EcoBoost engine, the winner of the International Engine of the Year trophy for an unprecedented third consecutive year.”

Total car sales were up by 6.2 percent for the month of June, and up 10.6 per cent year to date. In the commercial vehicle market, sales were up 11.0 percent for the first half of the year over 2013 sales, with Ford’s commercial vehicle sales rising from 36,478 in the first half of 2013 to 39,086 for the first half of 2014. Ford medium commercial sales, which include the popular Transit and Transit Custom, were up to 32,411 from 30,394 the previous year, while in light commercial sales the numbers increased from 5,544 to 6,675. This increase is attributed to the launches of the Ford Transit Connect and the Ford Transit Courier.
