Commercial Group Fuels its First Hydrogen Hybrid Ford Transit Delivery Van

With a great deal of fanfare, Commercial Group took delivery of the first of its new fleet of Hydrogen Hybrid Ford Transit delivery vans and drove it into the Air Products fueling station at Heathrow Airport. The internal combustion engine transit vehicles are part of the London Hydrogen Network Expansion (LHNE) project that was introduced by the Technology Strategy Board. The rest of the fleet’s delivery will be completed over the next several months as the initial van undergoes testing.

The fleet of hybrid vans has generated a tremendous amount of excitement within Commercial Group. According to Simon Graham an environmental strategist for the company, “We have spent many years reducing the environmental impact of our fleet, and hydrogen power offers a huge opportunity to lower it further. We look forward to the insights into the benefits of hydrogen technology that this development will yield.” The company will be utilizing the highly efficient vehicles to provide next day delivery service for its office supplies division. The customized vehicle was specially outfitted by Revolve Technologies, and is largely being utilized to serve as a model of how hydrogen-fuelled vehicles can be used for commercial applications.

The LHNE project is being led by Air Products, which plans another SmartFuel fueling station at another location in London in the coming months. Diana Raine of the company’s Hydrogen Energy Systems department said, “The deployment of these vans is another important step for the LHNE project which is bringing together all the components necessary to make hydrogen transport possible across London and the South East. We hope that this model will be replicated across the UK and Europe in years to come.”
