Rise in UK car sales during first six months
Recent data has highlighted the overwhelming positivity in the UK new vehicle market, with more than one million new cars registered in the first six months of 2014 alone.
With this figure being the best half year total since 2005, it was little surprise to see the Ford Fiesta reigning supreme at the top of the best-sellers list. The overall number of registrations confirmed for the first six months of the year was 1,287,265 – indicating a 10.6 per cent rise compared to figures last year. June in particular was a fantastic month, with the 228,291 sales during the month showing a healthy 6.2 per cent rise on June 2013.
Signalling growth for the 28th month consecutively, the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders believe that levels are set to rise by even more and the year-end figure could reach 2.4 million – an increase on last year by over six per cent.
Fiesta and Focus on podium of best-sellers
Of the best-selling new models on the market, the Ford Fiesta and Focus were in the top three and took first and third position respectively.
One of the reasons behind the rise in sales of new cars from Ford and other manufacturers is being attributed to consumers’ ever-growing demand for efficiency. This theory is concreted by the rise in alternatively fuelled models, with the 23,337 cars sold over the half-year period representing a 51.3 per cent rise; the number of registrations for pure electric vehicles more than doubled also.
