WHY SHOULD I GET A HOME EV CHARGER INSTALLED?

Installing electric car home chargers comes with several advantages:

  • Convenience: Just plug in your car at home overnight and it’s fully charged by morning.
  • Cost-Effective: Charging at home is significantly cheaper than using public rapid chargers, especially with off-peak energy tariffs.
  • Peace of Mind: Say goodbye to range anxiety – by installing an electric car charger at home, you control when and how you charge.
  • Smart Technology: Many home EV chargers come with apps such as Ford Pass that allow you to monitor and schedule charging remotely.
  • Faster Charging: A dedicated home EV charging point can be up to three times faster than using a standard 3-pin socket.
  • Safety: Electric car charger home installations meet strict safety standards and are far safer than using a domestic socket.

WHAT ARE THE EV CHARGER INSTALLATION REQUIREMENTS?

To proceed with home car charging installation, you’ll need the following:

  • Off-Street Parking: Such as a private driveway or garage.
  • Wi-Fi Connection: Most smart chargers require internet access.
  • Permission: If you rent your property, you’ll need landlord or management company consent.

You may be eligible for government grants towards cost of installing and EV charger at home if you're a renter or live in a flat or have on-street parking. Check eligibility and apply.

WHAT TYPE OF HOME CHARGER SHOULD I GET?

There are different types of EV chargers available on the market, so when you are looking at fitting an electric car charger at home, there are various factors to consider:

  • Power Needed: Most homes install a 7kW charger, which is sufficient for most EVs. A 7kW home charger delivers approximately three times more power than a standard domestic socket, meaning it also charges your EV around three times faster.
  • Connector Type: The UK standard is Type 2; older vehicles may use a Type 1 connector.
  • Tethered vs Untethered: Tethered chargers come with a cable fixed to it, which is usually quicker and more convenient to use. Untethered chargers offer more flexibility and are visually neater.
  • Cable Length: Standard installations usually include up to 10 metres of cabling.
  • Smart Features: Consider a unit that enables you to schedule charging remotely.

WHERE IS THE BEST PLACE TO INSTALL A HOME EV CHARGER?

Home EV chargers can be fitted indoors or outdoors, mounted on a wall or on a standalone post. Choosing the right location is important for safety, convenience, and ease of use. When deciding where to install your home EV charging point, consider the following:

  • A strong Wi-Fi or mobile signal, especially for smart chargers
  • The spot where you usually park your car
  • The location of your car’s charging port
  • Easy access to your home’s electrical supply
  • Avoid trip hazards, and think about how the installation might affect others who use the space, such as children, pets, or neighbours
  • If the area is safe, weatherproof, and easily accessible for daily use

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST TO INSTALL AN EV CHARGER AT HOME?

The cost of installing an EV charger at home can be between £800 and £1,200, depending on the charger’s model, features, and complexity of installation.

Whilst this initial outlay cost may seem high, charging at home can save you hundreds of pounds each year compared to using public charge points or paying for fuel.

With the FORD Power Promise, you can get a FREE Home Charger when you purchase a FORD EV, which could save you hundreds of pounds.*

CAN I INSTALL MY OWN EV CHARGING POINT?

No. EV charger installation must be done by a qualified electrician.

CAN I PLUG MY EV INTO A NORMAL SOCKET?

Yes – but it’s not recommended.

A three-pin domestic socket will charge your EV slowly (around 2.3kW) and lacks the safety features of a dedicated charger. For regular charging, a proper home charging point installation is the safer and faster option.

ELECTRIC CAR CHARGER INSTALLATION – WHAT TO EXPECT

When you start looking into installing a charger, there are four main steps to the process:

  1. Choose a charger: Select one based on power, features, and your EV's needs.
  2. Book a qualified installer: Always use a certified electrician.
  3. Installation survey: Some companies do this remotely or via photo uploads.
  4. Charger installation: Usually completed within a few hours, depending on complexity.
