Towing a caravan or trailer: A guide

Car towing a caravan along a fast road

Whether you're heading off on a camping holiday with a caravan, taking the horsebox to an event, or simply making a trip to the tip with a trailer, towing is something many drivers will encounter. But before you hitch up and hit the road, it's essential to understand the rules, limitations, and best practices to stay safe and legal.

In this article, Foray Motor Group will answer some key questions about towing a caravan or trailer in the UK.

Do you need a licence to tow a caravan or trailer?

The simple answer is yes, you do need a full driving licence to tow a caravan or trailer.

  • If you passed your driving test before 1st January 1997, you can drive a vehicle and trailer or caravan with a combined weight of up to 8,250 kg.
  • If you passed your test after 1st January 1997, you can drive a vehicle and trailer or caravan with a combined weight of up to 3,500 kg. If you exceed this weight limit, you will need to take an additional Category B+E test.

Your driving licence will show which vehicle categories you're allowed to drive.

What is the speed limit for towing a caravan or trailer

The speed limit for towing a trailer or caravan differs from normal speed limits.

  • On motorways or dual carriageways, you must not exceed 60mph
  • Single carriageways have a maximum speed of 50mph

Make sure you check road signs, as this can vary.

Always adjust your speed limits when towing a trailer or caravan in poor weather conditions, such as strong winds, as these can make it difficult to control the vehicles you are towing.

Do you need insurance for towing a caravan or trailer?

While you don't legally require separate insurance for towing a caravan or trailer, your vehicle must be insured, and your policy must include third-party liability when towing.

Check your policy to ensure you are covered. You may be able to upgrade or take out a separate policy to cover your towing journeys.

What weight caravan can I tow?

Not every car is suitable for towing. All cars that can be used for towing are given a maximum weight they can pull, known as towing capacity. That capacity includes the weight of the trailer and load.

Your vehicle’s Maximum Authorised Mass (MAM) -  also called Maximum Permissible Weight (MPW) or Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW) -  is critical. This figure can be found in your vehicle’s handbook.

What size caravan can I tow?

In the UK, the maximum size for a car and caravan combination is 18 metres long and 2.55 metres wide (including mirrors and attachments). You may need special permission to tow it if it exceeds this width.

If your trailer or caravan is wider than your vehicle, you’ll need mirror extenders for proper rear visibility.

Can you tow a caravan with an electric car?

Yes! Many EVs are suitable for towing. Their instant torque delivery makes them well-suited to heavy loads. However, towing can reduce your battery range, so it’s important to check the location of charging points along your route.

Do I need a number plate on my trailer or caravan?

Yes, caravans and trailers are legally required to display a yellow number plate showing the towing vehicle’s registration.

What is the best vehicle for towing a caravan or trailer?

The best cars for towing caravans or trailers depend on what you are towing, as well as your other driving needs.

However, as a general rule, the heavier and larger the towing vehicle, the better. Four-wheel-drive vehicles can also add extra traction in slippery conditions.

Safety tips for towing caravans and trailers

  • Practice reversing and turning corners before your journey.
  • Never carry passengers in a moving caravan.
  • Ensure your trailer is fitted with the same set of lights as your car.
  • Try to keep the caravan as light as possible. Position heavy items low down and close to the axle.
  • Make sure your vehicles are well-matched and consider using stabilisers to prevent snaking.
  • Ensure your tow brackets are tested to British or European standards.
  • Check your car and caravan's tyres before setting out on a trip. Increasing the rear tyre pressure when towing a caravan is usually recommended – check your vehicle handbook for details.
