Motability - Am I eligible?
You will need to receive one of the following mobility allowances and must have at least 12 months’ award length remaining to be eligible to join the Motability Scheme. Please note that the Attendance Allowance cannot be used to lease a car through the Scheme.
- Higher Rate Mobility Component of Disability Living Allowance (HRMC DLA)
As of 8 April 2015, this allowance is £57.45 per week.
- Enhanced Rate Mobility Component of Personal Independence Payment (ERMC PIP)
As of 6 April 2015, this allowance is £57.45 per week.
- War Pensioners' Mobility Supplement (WPMS)
As of 6 April 2015, this allowance is £64.15 per week.
- Armed Forces Independence Payment (AFIP)
As of 8 April 2015, the mobility element of the allowance is £57.45 per week.
There's no upper age limit for the scheme, as long as you receive one of the allowances listed above. The Attendance Allowance is not a qualifying benefit. The Government has begun to replace Disability Living Allowance (DLA) with Personal Independence Payment (PIP) for all disabled people aged between 16 and 64.
If you are awarded the Enhanced Rate of the Mobility Component of PIP, you will still be able to lease a car through the Motability Scheme, as you did beforehand.
But do not panic, if you have at least 12 months of your current allowance remaining, then you will still be able to choose your new vehicle during the PIP rollout.
If you have any worries about the PIP rollout please feel free to contact one of our Mobability Advisors, who will be more than happy to talk you through the ordering process.
Do I Need a Driving Licence?
If you opt for the Mobility scheme it’s not an essential for you to drive. You can nominate friends and family members as drivers if you are not capable to drive the vehicle yourself. Up to two drivers can be nominated for no cost at all, with an extra cost for a third person. All of the people you nominate should live within five miles of your address, and have to agree to Motability's terms and conditions.
The eligibility of your nominated drivers will depend on 3 things:
- Their ages
- Any criminal record they might have
- The insurance group of the Motability car you choose.
Only one driver under the age of 21 is allowed, and drivers up to the age of 25 can only drive models with 115bhp or less in insurance brackets 1-16. Speak to one of our Motability Specialists for more information.
If you have a child aged three years or older who is claiming DLA, you will also be able to apply for a car on their behalf as their parent or guardian. You will then be their nominated driver for the vehicle.
